Nicotine Addiction: The Hardest Addiction To Cure, Increases By 1.6% Every Year
Nicotine, what comes into your mind when you encounter this word? For some, they think cigarettes, while others think of it as some form of drug. But would you believe that in the past, nicotine is used as an insecticide? Yes, it was used once as an insecticide. But how did it turn into the nicotine we know today? Well it didn’t actually change, it’s the same but in low concentration. In low concentrations, nicotine acts like a stimulant for mammals and it’s the main factor responsible for the dependence-forming properties of tobacco smoking.
Throughout medical history, nicotine addiction is one of the hardest addictions to cure. In fact it keeps rising and one study found that there was an average increase of 1.6% per year between the years of 1998 and 2005. This was found for all major market categories of cigarettes.
We can never deny that, nicotine is part of culture. Even if we don’t like it, it will remain. And more and more people will continue to smoke, even if others despise that fact. But on the bright side, it also has the effect of increasing alertness and enhancing mental performance. In the cardiovascular system, it increases heart rate and blood pressure and restricts blood flow to the heart muscle. The drug in which we call nicotine stimulates the release of the hormone epinephrine, which further stimulates the nervous system and is responsible for part of the "kick" from nicotine. It also promotes the release of the hormone beta-endorphin, which inhibits pain. But it doesn’t mean it’s good for you, you can light up another cigarette and feel good about it. Don’t forget another grave fact, when I mean grave, I really mean it!
